Maggie Griffin’s Life Journey Maggie Lee Griffin was born the sixth child to the late Crockett and Charity Walker on May 11, 1931. Growing up as a farmer’s daughter in Port Gibson, Mississippi, she learned how to cook, clean, and manage a household. Although domesticated, her family believed that education was important. She attended and graduated from Claiborne County High School in Port Gibson, Mississippi. Years later, Maggie achieved her clerical certification and hairstylist license. At a young age, she attended the Rising Sun Missionary Baptist Church where she learned about God’s Word. Maggie continued participating in the church until she migrated to Indianapolis, Indiana. Indianapolis is where she met her late husband, Richard Griffin, Jr., and his 3 children and they grew their family. Maggie had a big heart filled with love that was not restricted to immediate family members, but it reached others. Maggie’s love shined as she raised two of her granddaughters (Tasha & Mikeya) as her own. It was in the 1960's when Maggie relocated to St. Paul, Minnesota. She transferred her home training into the workforce and built a career in food and services. Maggie worked a variety of jobs as a waitress and cook. She even showed off her hair styling skills when she needed extra money. One of her dearest memories was working at the Ober Boys Club in St. Paul, MN where she helped young people. After working various jobs, Maggie found employment at St. Paul Technical College (T.V.I). This was another opportunity for her to help and support young people. After 16 rewarding years of employment, she retired. Upon arriving in Minnesota Maggie joined Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church in St. Paul where she actively participated and worked on various committees. Maggie loved people! Her love for people continued to blossom as she volunteered at Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Maggie wanted to help other people do better, so she took delight in volunteering as a coordinator for AA support groups. In Maggie’s leisure, she loved hanging out on the porch, visiting family and friends, reciting stories, and laughing. She had a great sense of humor and a great big smile to go with it. She was a loving and caring person. Also, she enjoyed family gatherings at Phalen Park. And let us not forget those Sunday dinners she would cook to bring everyone together. Maggie Griffin was a loyal and loving Mother, Sister, Aunt, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Friend. She was welcomed into the Lord's arms on July 30, 2020 and will join her parents and other loved ones who preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Margie Griffin-Stewart of St. Paul, MN, Deloris (Michael) Evans of Mankato, MN, Valerie (Stephen) Payne of Brooklyn Park, MN, Diana (Simon) Vidal of St. Paul, MN, Barbara Leslie (step-daughter) of Indianapolis, IN.; sons, Enoch Griffin of St. Paul, MN and Larry Griffin of St. Paul, MN; two granddaughters she raised, Tasha Griffin of Dallas, TX and Mikeya Griffin of St. Paul, MN; sister, Priscilla Waker of Joliet, IL; brother, LeeRoy (Betty) Walker of St. Paul, MN; brother-in-Law, Charles Thomas of Indianapolis, IN; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends. Visitation 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Friday August 7th at the Spielman Mortuary, 344 W. University Ave., St. Paul. Interment in Elmhurst Cemetery. In accordance with the recently implemented mandate issued by the Governor of Minnesota, a face mask is required to enter the building. Also, we can now accommodate up to a maximum of 45 people in the mortuary at any one time. Please be respectful and limit your time in the mortuary if it appears to be getting crowded.
