Malcolm Young
October 15th, 1933 - June 9th, 2015
Malcolm ("Mac") Young, age 81, was the first born of twin sons of Irving and Alice (Davis) Young in Lancaster, NH on October 15, 1933. The family moved to Belfast, ME when he was nine. Malcolm graduated from Crosby High School in the Class of 1951 with honors, including the Bausch and Lomb science award and a scholarship to the University of Maine where he majored in Chemical Engineering. After his sophomore year he was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. His experience in operating an Army radio station fostered an interest in Electrical Engineering, so after completing service, Mac switched majors and graduated with a BSEE from the University of Maine. He then joined IBM in a newly formed Federal System Division. He retired from there in 1993 after 35 years. He was fortune to have been involved in pioneering computer use for NASA (Gemini), the Air Force (F-15 Fighter), the Navy (Submarine Sonar), the NASA Moon Launch (Stage 4 Control), and the NASA Space Shuttle (Flight Control). His final 12 years were devoted to advanced semiconductor research for outer space survival (DARPA). In 1958 Mac married Marilyn Lafferre, in Vestal, NY. Following the birth of two daughters and a divorce, he married Margaret Christy. Shortly after Mac's retirement, Margaret, at age 58 and 16 years of marriage, died from untreatable cancer, in 1994 at their home in Augusta, WV. Mac then joined a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity as a board member/volunteer. A year later a widow, Doris (Klingensmith) Chule, joined the Habitat board as treasurer. Mac and she married in 1996. After working with Habitat for six years the couple returned to Mac's hometown in Maine, where they continued volunteering in community service. Mac spent 5 years working on the Memorial Bridge Project, and both were active in the Belfast Historical Society and Museum. They joined the Belfast United Methodist Church where Doris again served as treasurer and Mac served on the Board of Trustees and volunteered at the local food pantry. As they aged, the Belfast winters tempted them to visit Doris' sister in Sun City, AZ, and eventually they moved there in 2007. Mac is survived by his wife, Doris; his sister, Josephine "Jo" and her husband, James "Skip" Pendleton; two daughters, Allison Beauparlant and husband Ted, and their six children Andrew, Teddy, Emily, Caroline, Sophie Grace, and Jackson; and his daughter Jennifer and children Colin, Christian, and Benjamin. He was predeceased by his parents and his twin brother, Melvin. Mac was under care of Hospice of the Valley, and died at home on June 9, 2015 in a comfortable atmosphere. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Palms UCC at 2PM on June 16, 2015, and his cremains will be preserved in the Memorial Garden at the church. Memorials for Mac may be sent to the Church of the Palms, 14808 Boswell Blvd., Sun City, AZ 85351. Service Information Tuesday, June 16th, 2015 2:00pm, Church of the Palms
