Margaret Lillian Bullock Knox

Margaret Knox was looking forward to celebrating her 90th birthday this Thursday, June 20, but passed peacefully from this earth on Monday, June 17, 2013, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born in Lexington, North Carolina, in 1923, to Clayton DeLamar Bullock and Ina Phillips Bullock, and she spent her childhood in Dilworth and adult life in Myers Park. Having been graduated from Central High School in 1941, Margaret attended Salem College for three years before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from which she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1946 in zoology and chemistry. She worked in the medical profession with Dr. Otho B. Ross, Sr., Dr. Otho B. Ross, Jr., and Dr. Stanley S. Burns. Margaret was a devoted mother to her daughter Lynn, for whom she cared unselfishly, and was a very devoted grandmother to her granddaughter Caroline. She had many lifelong interests and hobbies: a keen bridge player, an avid golfer, and a lover of flowers and gardening. Margaret "Bull" Knox brought a smile to many people as a thoughtful friend with a skill for entertaining guests in her home, including her famous homemade cheese biscuits and other treats. She opened her house every Christmas Day, welcoming neighbors and friends to celebrate the wonderful holiday, and she loved to spend time with her family, especially playing cards with Caroline and feeding the ducks with her. She enjoyed fellowship with many groups of friends, including the Lunch Bunch, a lively circle who shared happy times for over 55 years. She was a faithful member of Myers Park United Methodist Church, where she served a term as President of the United Methodist Women, receiving a Life Membership pin. She also served at the church as both Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Administrative Board, as well as President of both the Ruth Fisher Class and the Fellowship Class. Margaret was also active for many years in the Salem College Alumnae Association, and served a term as President. She was a Daughter of the American Revolution and was Regent of its Battle of Charlotte Chapter. She was also a member of the Myers Park Country Club, the Stratton Book Club, and the Flower Trail Garden Club. Margaret survived her parents, her brother Clayton DeLamar Bullock, Jr., and her sister Eva Martin Bullock. She is survived by her daughter Lynn Knox Poole, her son-in-law Edwin S. Poole, III, and her granddaughter Caroline Chapin Poole, all of Tampa, Florida; her cousin Marguerite Phillips of Dillon, South Carolina; several other cousins; and by many close friends from Myers Park United Methodist Church and from Salem College, who reunited every year. A service in memory of Margaret Knox will be held at 3 PM, Thursday, June 20, 2013 in the sanctuary of Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, with a reception and visitation in the Jubilee Hall of the church after the service. A private inurnment will be held at the church prior to the service. Memorials for her can be made to the Fellowship Class Scholarship Fund of Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207 and to Salem College, 601 East Church Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27101.
