Margaret Lax Weir Mayhew
August 30th, 1927 - March 6th, 2024
Margaret Lax Weir Mayhew, 96, went home to the Lord, on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Margaret was the youngest of 7 children born to The Rev. Herbert Lax, Sr. and Mary Osbron Lax in Trimble, Tennessee, on August 30, 1927. She attended Lambuth College in Jackson, Tennessee, as a voice major with the goal of opera until a throat condition ended that possibility. She married The Rev. John Weir, Jr. in 1947 with whom she had two children, Kenneth Lynn and Tanya Marie, but that marriage ended in 1975. Margaret moved to Cape Coral, Florida in 1982, where she met and married Hubert (Herb) Mayhew. She and Herb were married for 18 years until Herb’s death in 2002. Margaret remained in Cape Coral where she was active in Cape Coral First United Methodist Church. Even though she was unable to have a career in voice, Margaret sang for many weddings and funerals until she was over 80 years old. In 2012, she moved to Orlando, Florida, to live with her daughter and son-in-law for her remaining years. During that time, she wrote a book about her life and was active in the card ministry at St. Matthews Episcopal Church. She was devoted to her church, family, and friends and was known for her beautiful smile and big warm hugs. She truly loved people and having an “attitude of gratitude” was her way of life. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Tanya Marie Weir Turner (and son-in-law Frederick Turner), 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild from her first marriage. She is also survived by her stepson, Dale Betts (wife Shirley), 4 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren from her marriage with Herb. In addition to her loving husband, Herb, Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Mary Lax, her siblings, Jessie, Coville, Kittie, Franklin, Herbert Jr, and Mary Edith, her son, Kenneth Lynn Weir, stepdaughter, Rita Mayhew, and step-granddaughter Patricia “Pat” Betts Klopatek. A Visitation will be held from 9:00a until 12:00p, on Monday, March 18, 2024, at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Rd, Frankfort, KY, with a Graveside Service to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Frankfort, with Pastor Jack Brewer officiating. There will be a Memorial Service in Orlando, Florida, at a later date.
