She attended Central Primary, Euclid, Mirror Lake, and St. Petersburg High School. As a young girl she took piano lesson and played the snare drum in a private band formed by her music teacher. Her older sister also played the drums. Marian?s main interest as a young girl was in cosmetology. She was very good at working with her hands and did her hair and other peoples. At 16 she got her first job setting hair at a beauty shop across the street from her dad?s drug store at 9th St. and 7th Ave. called Enman?s Beauty Shop. During this time she met Charlie Heim whose family had a bakery next door. Actually their first meeting took place on Central Ave. while cruising with friends to the pier. Marian was with her sister and friends and three boys stopped beside them at the pier. Charlie Heim owned the car and they invited them for a ride. Marian knew two of the boys but checked with her parents before accepting the invitation. They dated about a year and got married on Marian?s eighteenth birthday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gardner officiating in his office. Later she went to work at San Rhafeal Beauty Shop at Lotus St. and 13th Ave., then Scientific Beauty Salon on First Ave. between 4th and 5th Street and finally Barnes Beauty Shop at Central and fourth. Charlie was working in the family business, Heim?s bakery located on Central Ave. and 9th Street. In Oct. of 1936, Charlie?s dad died suddenly and Marian?s working career changed. It was decided that Marian would be good at cake decorating and she went to Chicago with her brother in law, Frank to study at Lambeth Decorating School. Upon returning to St. Pete she worked full time at cake decorating in Heim?s Bakery located at Ninth and Central. She continued to work in the business with her husband until it was sold in 1950. Federal Bake Shop, a chain, bought the bakery. Marian became a full time mother of two daughters, Sharron and Nancy, later adding a boy, Larry, to the family in 1952.
