Marie lost her mother when she was only three, and was raised by her paternal grandparents. Her father remarried and came to the United States in 1925. Marie followed, arriving in Pittsburgh, PA in 1933. She married, Arthur Heinrich Wolter, originally from Bremen, Germany, on July 11, 1938.
