Marilyn Brown

A private committal will be held in Santa Cruz for Marilyn Brown who passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz this past Tuesday. She would have celebrated her 93rd birthday next month. Born in Red Oak, Iowa, Marilyn was blessed with intelligence and determination; graduating from high school at the age of 16, and immediately enrolling at the University of Nebraska. Marilyn earned her bachelor's degree in Journalism from Nebraska at a time when few women were able to obtain a college education. For more than 20 years she had a career in the banking industry. She lived and worked most of her life in Nebraska, and later in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Marilyn moved to Santa Cruz in 1987 to be near her daughter and her family. Marilyn enjoyed reading, classical music and knitting. She was an accomplished Bridge player, and cherished the friendships that she made throughout the years. She was a longtime member of Peace United Church of Christ in Santa Cruz, and will be remembered by her church family. Marilyn is survived by her daughters, Lisa Hoesing of Santa Cruz and Christine Thompson of London, England. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren Kayla and Ian Hoesing, and her great grandson, Don Hoesing. Marilyn was preceded in death by her daughter, Dennise Carol Brown of Santa Cruz in 2014. The Memorial Service is to be held at Peace United Church of Christ, on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at 11:00 A.M.
