Mrs. Marilyn R. Monroe, age 87, of Galway, NY, died Thursday, November 6, 2014 at her home with her family at her side. She was born March 5, 1927 in Plattsburg, NY, the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Ferral Buchanan. She and her family came to Gloversville when she was 4 years old. She was employed at the former Gloversville Dry Battery and worked for her parents at the B & L Diner. She later worked as a nurse's aide at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa. Mrs. Monroe was a member of the Providence Baptist Church, the Broadalbin Senior Citizens and the former Providence Volunteer Ambulance Corps Women's Auxiliary. Marilyn was married to Kenneth L. Monroe on October 29, 1948. He died September 12, 1998. She is survived by five children: Donna MacDonald (Edward) of Winnebago, IL, Cheryl McElhinery (Stephen) of Galway, Doris Monroe of Galway, Michael Monroe of San Diego, CA and Nora Monroe of Schenectady; two brothers: George Buchanan (Dorothy) of Cleveland, OH and James Buchanan (Peggy) of Gloversville. She also leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Marilyn was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Monroe, and a sister, Shirley Susen. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11am to 1pm Saturday, November 8th at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St; Broadalbin, where a funeral service will follow at 1:00pm with the Rev. Dr. R. W. Williams officiating. Interment will take place at Broadalbin Union Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Broadalbin Senior Citizens, 68 W. Main St; Broadalbin, NY 12025 or to the Galway Public Library, 5264 Sacandaga Rd; Galway, NY 12074.
