Mario Chavez

Mario Chavez was born on September 2, 1931 in the City of Angels, Los Angeles, CA. On January 20, 2017 he died peacefully in his home in La Mesa, CA with his family beside him. Mario grew up in El Centro, CA until he left to join the Air Force. He served his country in the Korean War. After his service to his country, he went to school to study Barbering and Cosmetology. Mario worked at his profession for over 60 years. He had his salon in La Mesa for over 40 years and he was revered as one of East County’s premier hair professionals. Survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Rachel and his two children, Mark and Michelle Chavez of La Mesa, CA, brother Ernie Chavez of Palm Desert, CA and sister Lucy Ramirez of El Centro, CA. While growing up in El Centro, he played quarterback at Central High School and took his team to the championship. He also did track and field, enjoyed fixing cars and spent time as a boy scout. As kids, Mario worked in his father’s barbershop, hotel and pool hall along side his brother Ernie. They would cut hair and shine shoes without his father’s knowledge to earn money. Mario was a devoted San Diego Chargers and Padres fan. He enjoyed bowling and playing pool with his friends. He loved working in his yard and working on household projects. He lived in La Mesa, CA for over 65 years and loved his home. He was an amazing father, friend and husband and he will be missed greatly. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Miramar National Cemetery at 11:30 am. Location address is 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122. Immediately following the service, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Embassy Suites at 4550 La Jolla Village Dr, San Diego, CA 92122.
