Marion H. Nelson
April 19th, 1939 - September 10th, 2024
Marion H. Chadbourne Nelson (née Horta), known for her unwavering dedication and compassionate care, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, in Northampton, at the age of 85. Born on April 19, 1939, in Nashua, New Hampshire, Marion's life was marked by love, service, and a deep connection to family and community.
Marion was the beloved wife of Jim Nelson and a devoted mother to Lloyd (Cynthia) Chadbourne, Debra Kopacz and Robert "Yogi" (Clarie) Hughes as well as son in laws, John Aliengena and Mark Santucci . Her two sisters, Jacqueline Corbett, and Ramona Parker also survive her. She was predeceased by her parents, Ramon Horta II and Marion G. (Pearson) Horta, as well as her children, Rebecca Hebert, Katrina Aliengena, and Pamela Santucci, and her sisters, Juanita, Donna, and Doris. Marion's legacy continues through her eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish her memory.
A proud member of the first graduating class of Mary Lane Hospital's LPN program, Marion dedicated her career to caring for others. At the former Belchertown State School, Marion began her work in direct care and later had more of an administrative role. She worked at the state school until her retirement and then went on to playing a pivotal role in setting up group homes when the state school closed. Her passion for caregiving extended to providing personal care in people's homes throughout her life. Marion's commitment to others was unparalleled, embodying the true spirit of a caregiver.
Marion held her childhood memories and family connections in the highest regard. After moving to Belchertown, she worked diligently on the family farm, fostering a love for hard work and family unity that she carried with her throughout her life. She enjoyed participating in the local pitch league, a testament to her love of socializing and community spirit.
A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on September 18th, followed by a service at 5 p.m. at the Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home. To further honor her memory, on Saturday the 21 please join the family at 9am in front of Marion's home as they gather for the parade, as they always had in the past. Light refreshments will be served. In line with Marion's giving nature, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Salvation Army, an organization close to her heart.
Marion H. Nelson will be remembered for her altruistic spirit, her steadfast devotion to her family, and her enduring impact on all who knew her. Her legacy of love and care will live on, inspiring future generations to follow in her compassionate footsteps.
