Mark S. Goldberg
August 12th, 2015
Mark S. Goldberg, 65, passed away peacefully at his home in Vienna, VA on August 12, 2015, after a short battle with cancer. Born July 8, 1950 in Washington, D.C., Mark was the son of the late Joseph “George” and Ruth Goldberg. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from The University of Michigan, where he was active in the Men’s Glee Club, the Marching Band, and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Prior to his retirement in 2014, he worked as a systems engineer in a number of technology companies in the D.C. area, beginning with Telenet and including Sprint and Cisco. Mark was an avid sailor – over the years he kept several boats and enjoyed taking family and friends out on the Chesapeake Bay. He loved to sing and had a beautiful bass voice. He was a former member of Hexagon and was currently active in several area Toastmasters clubs. Mark loved to travel. With his wife Sara, he visited many parts of the British Isles on numerous occasions, as well as South America for both pleasure and business. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends, especially when it involved single malt Scotch. He and his wife designed and built their dream home in Vienna, VA, and Mark was actively engaged in home improvement projects until his illness. He had recently begun a business, TechnoSpeaker, devoted to training technologists in the art of presenting their ideas effectively. Mark was a longtime subscriber and supporter of Arena Stage, a lover of theater and the performing arts, and remained an active supporter of the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club. Mark is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Sara Byrd Goldberg; brother, Henry (Carol) Goldberg of Silver Spring, MD; niece, Julie (Jeff) Goldberg-Zieger of Arlington, MA; nephew, Paul Goldberg (Meredith Herr) of Ben Lomond, CA; great-nieces, Abigail Goldberg-Zieger and Vivian Goldberg; and beloved dog Chloe. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mark’s memory may be made to University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club (https://ummgc.org), Arena Stage (www.arenastage.org/donate), or to a charity of one’s choice.
