Mark Alan Westfall
April 12th, 1949 - July 24th, 2020
Mark Westfall, 71, of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully at home on Friday morning, July 24, 2020. He was under hospice care for multiple cancers. Mark Alan Westfall was born April 12, 1949 in Detroit, the son of Gordon Alvin Westfall and Helen Louise Haworth Westfall. He was a graduate of Cody High School, and then served in the United States Army, having won the National Defense Service Medal, and reached the rank of SP4. After an Honorable Discharge in August 1971, he enrolled in Detroit's Society of Arts and Crafts, majoring in Commercial Art, all with the assistance provided by the G.I. Bill. Mark was an incredible artist, beginning in the Motor City, where he produced many award-winning vans, motorcycles and race cars, initially using an airbrush. Many artists confine themselves to a particular 'style' or technique. Mark was an artist who was known and respected for his creativity in virtually any endeavor, because he was not bound by restrictions. Therein lay Mark's strength: his ability to change. Regardless of the project size, large or small, he devoted all his skills and attention to detail, to produce a work of art that would fulfill the expectations of even the most discerning person. In addition to the airbrush and automotive paints, he also used watercolors and acrylics. He painted on vehicles, canvas, barn wood, old fence pieces, murals inside Laura Bell's Lounge and the Union Station bar, custom signs, the cover of the Hill Climb racing program in the 80's, and even airbrushed designs on the yokes of custom Western shirts. After moving back to Colorado Springs in July 2008 from a 3-year residence in Fountain Hills, AZ he began to experiment with kinetic sculptures, made from old brass lamps, computer mother boards, disks, and brass wires. His works grace many homes and businesses across the country. His repertoire also included t-shirt designs, logos, posters, custom business cards, and banners. He had only resumed painting in November 2019, until a broken leg in June 2020 halted his creativity, but his many new paintings cover the walls of his bedroom studio. Mark is survived by his sister Sandy Dickson (John) of Northville, MI; cousins Dan (Laurie) and Terry (Denny); nieces and great-nieces Carly, Megan, Everly and Kennedy, and great-nephew Aiden, all of the Detroit area. He is also survived by Sarah Carr, his best friend of 36 years, caregiver and roommate; as well as a plethora of loving friends. He also leaves behind FraidyCat, to comfort Sarah. Mark was preceded in death by his Mother and Father. Because of COVID-19, a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Mark has been cremated and it was his wish to scatter his ashes in the Cripple Creek area in the fall of 2020, when the Aspen turn to a brilliant golden color. 'Once in a long while, somebody special walks into your life and then has to go their separate way. Every time you see a certain gesture, hear a certain laugh or phrase, or return to a certain place, it reminds you of them. You treasure the time you had with them: your eyes fill with tears, a big smile comes across your face, and you thank God that someone can still touch your heart so deeply. You remember their words, their looks, their expressions: you remember how much of themselves they gave-not just to you, but to all. You remember the strength that amazed you, the courage that impressed you, the grace that inspired you, and the love that touched you.'
