Martha Helms McKnight

Mrs. Martha Helms McKnight, age 89, passed away on January 12, 2016 at the Transitions Hospice House of Raleigh. Mrs. McKnight was born on December 7, 1926 to the late Vernon Talmadge Helms, Sr. and Elizabeth Moore Helms. Following graduation from Indian Trail High School and Flora MacDonald College, Mrs. McKnight married the late Harold Francis McKnight, to whom she was married for 58 years. She was the mother of two children, the late Honorable H. Brent McKnight and Dr. Martha Anne McKnight of Dunn, NC. She has three grandsons, H. Brent McKnight, Jr., Matthew Charles McKnight, and Samuel Stephen McKnight of Charlotte, NC. During her life, she was an avid genealogist and gardener and devoted herself to her family"s care. She was an active member of the Mecklenburg Historical Association, the Colonial Dames, the Mecklenburg Chapter of the DAR, the Stonewall Jackson Chapter of the UDC, and was active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Professional Engineers of North Carolina. She also enjoyed traveling across the United States and in Europe to visit her daughter. She was preceded in death by her son, her husband, and her three older siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Anne McKnight, her daughter-in-law, Beth Herion McKnight of Charlotte, NC, and her three beloved grandsons. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Ernest Tsitouris of Monroe, NC and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Arrangements are being handled by J.B. Tallent Funeral Service. Her funeral will be held on January 16, 2016 at 11:30 am at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC with the Rev. Dr. Jane Fobel officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank her devoted caregivers at Carillon Assisted Living of Fuquay-Varina and Duke-Raleigh Hospital.
