Martha Mitchell
March 3rd, 1926 - March 3rd, 1926
Martha Ruth Mitchell (Marshie) Clark went home to be with the Lord on July 28, 2010 She was born March 3, 1926 in Pilot Mountain, NC to the late Ruth Etta Francis Redman and Walter Raleigh Mitchell. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her brother Jerry Rufus Mitchell and wife Irene Simmons Mitchell, her sister Lucy Ann Mitchell Stone and husband Grady E. (Stony) Stone, and Martha's very loving in-laws Dorothy Hedgecock Clark and George Samuel Clark. After graduating from Limestone College, she worked for the Commander of the Office of Flying Safety in Winston-Salem before starting her family. She then devoted herself to being a mother and grandmother for the next six decades. Surviving are her children Cynthia Clark and husband Joseph Hackley of Chapel Hill, Karen Clark Gilmer and husband Richard Bellotte Gilmer of Pawley's Island, SC, Brent Mitchell Clark and wife Cindy Hovey Clark of Chapel Hill, and Alan Hedgecock Clark and wife Meredith Crowder Clark of Memphis, Tennessee. Marshie was a beloved grandmother to her six grandchildren: Edward and Clark Gilmer, Emma and Benjamin Clark, and Mitchell and Raleigh Clark. She is also survived by her five nieces and nephews. Martha was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church for 56 years, and enjoyed having been a part of the Morris Class. She cherished her many friendships with her neighbors, having lived on the same block for the past 50 years. Martha loved traveling to her children's homes, long visits with their families and friends, and yet was always thankful to be back in her own home. She was an avid bridge player and very enthusiastic NC State and Carolina basketball fan. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the many friends, neighbors and caregivers involved in Martha's life. They are grateful for the loving, personal care given by Bland Whitley and Jane Wiren these recent months that allowed Martha to remain in her own home. Bland and Jane will forever be dear to us. The family is also grateful for the care received from Rev. Bill Ellison, Jackie Johnson RN and Dr. James Weissman, the many dedicated caregivers of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro and Angel Hands Home Care, and the Moses Cone Regional Cancer Center team. A celebration of Martha's life will occur on Saturday July 31 at 11 am in the Leak Chapel at West Market Street United Methodist Church. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church's Gathering Space. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made either to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro or to West Market Street United Methodist Church. Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service is assisting the Clark family. Online condolences may be made at www.lambethtroxlerfuneralhome.com
