Mary Chubb
February 11th, 2012
At the age of 82 Mary Chubb, a practitioner and supporter of the arts, succumbed to illness on February 11, 2012. Mary had suffered deteriorating health for six weeks while being treated and cared for at Cottage Hospital and Vista Del Monte. Mary Chubb was born in London, England, March 21, 1929. She endured the travails of WWII. While her father was serving the war effort in Scotland, she and mother joined him to avoid the London bombings. At the age of 20 Mary immigrated to Canada and several years later to California. Eventually she settled in Santa Barbara where she had a 15-year career as secretary to the City Library Director. Upon retirement Mary became engaged in the fiber arts. She was active in the Fiber Arts Guild, showing her work throughout Santa Barbara. She was a supporter of the Santa Barbara Symphony. Writing and sharing her poetry was another facet of the arts important to Mary. Ms. Chubb was a member of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara where she served on the Library Committee and took part in dramatizations. She also was a member of the Santa Barbara Chapter of Health Care for All. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, March 16 at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, 1535 Santa Barbara Street. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the USSB Library in the memory of Mary Chubb.
