Mary B DeWald

Mary B. DeWald, 102, passed away on March 30, 2021, while residing at her son’s home in Summerville, South Carolina. She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1918. She graduated from Indiana University in 1940 and belonged to the Chi Omega sorority. She became an elementary school teacher and was very active in several women’s groups. She supported many organizations, including the Arts. She was married to Paul DeWald, who co-owned the DeWald Firestone business in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and preceded her in death in 2003. She was a long-time resident of Fort Wayne, Indiana. She moved close to her daughter in 2013 to reside in an independent apartment within a nursing facility in Mishawaka, Indiana. As her health worsened, she moved to Summerville, South Carolina to live with her son and daughter-in-law. She is survived by her brother, James Benninghoff of Fort Wayne, Indiana; son Daniel (Sandy) DeWald of Summerville, SC, daughter Nancy (Stephen) Ball of Cassopolis, Michigan; grandchildren Katie DeWald (Guy Bieber) of Mesa, AZ; Jon (Tori) DeWald and Erika DeWald (Tony Tallent) of Summerville, SC; Christopher (Miranda) Ball of Findley, Ohio; Kelly (Amy) Ball of Granger, Indiana; as well as thirteen great grandchildren and her beloved nieces and nephews. There will be a private service later to honor her exemplary life and accomplishments. Arrangements are being facilitated by Simplicity: Low Country Cremation and Burial Services in Ladson, SC. Her final resting place will be at Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
