Mary Rose Spoto Duchow, age 89, died peacefully on December 11, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. under hospice care in AlmaVia Assisted Living in San Francisco. Born in Marysville, California, July 2nd, 1928, the loving daughter of the late, Catherine Rose Liuzza Spoto and Henry Rudolph Spoto, Sr., a Sutter County nurseryman, and orchardist. Mary graduated from Franklin Elementary School, and Sutter Union High School before graduating from Healds Business College in Sacramento. She worked as a Legal Secretary in the District Attorney's office in Sacramento for several years, later opening her own legal secretarial service in Sacramento, then San Francisco, where she was employed by various attorneys. She married Donald C. Duchow, a San Francisco attorney in 1966. They later divorced. Mary was very proud of her Sicilian heritage. A great cook, she collected recipes and enjoyed cooking gourmet Italian food. Many of the very best recipes were passed down from her mother. A country girl at heart, Mary, even when living in the city, reminisced about her childhood on N. Township Road where the family home was surrounded by the growing grounds of Spoto Nursery and family peach orchard. She is survived by her loving family, brothers; Henry R. Spoto, Jr. (Lenore Roberta Erickson), of El Macero, William Bill Paul Spoto Sr., (Leita Rosetta Smith), of Nevada City, nephews; Gary Phillip Spoto, M.D. (Susan Diane Chambliss), of Poway, Stuart Craig Spoto, (Christy May Benty) of Sacramento, William Paul Spoto, Jr. (Tamra Ann Fulkerson), of Yuba City, her niece, Kathleen Camille Kathy Spoto, (Arne Michael Gallagher) of Nevada City, grandnieces; Alana Catherine Spoto, Arianna Bailey Spoto, Alexi Taylor Spoto, Natalie Grace Gallagher, and grandnephews; Aaron Phillip and Matthew Addison Gallagher. Graveside services will be held Thursday, December 21st, 2017, at 11a.m. at Sutter Cemetery, Sutter, California, under the direction of Ullery Memorial Chapel, Inc. In lieu of flowers, contributions to your local hospice in remembrance of Mary is suggested by the family.
