Mary "Anderson Atkinson" L. Dufur
October 23rd, 1923 - January 28th, 2017
Mary Louise Anderson Atkinson Dufur, 93, returned to her heavenly home on January 28, 2017 at a daughter’s home in South Jordan, Utah. Mary was born in Layton, Utah on October 23, 1923, a daughter of Arthur Raymond Anderson and Mary Alice Hill Anderson. She was the third of five children. On June 3, 1944, she married Roy Everett Atkinson at Fort Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) on August 11, 1944. In February, 1951 Mary and Roy moved to Middleton, Idaho where they developed 40 acres of sagebrush into a working dairy operation. Roy suddenly got sick, and he died on September 4, 1955. She helped with the construction of the downtown Middleton LDS Building in the late 1950’s. On September 16, 1972, she married George W. Dufur, who died on June 29, 1994. She was a faithful visiting teacher. All three of Mary’s sons served LDS missions. Two went to Viet Nam (where one was wounded in action and the other was killed in action). All five surviving children were married in LDS Temples. Mary is the grandmother of 27 grandchildren, 98 great-grandchildren (with two on the way) and 1 great-great-grandson. Mary served for many years with the Young Women in her LDS ward. Mary’s main occupation was as a homemaker with a small dairy herd, but she also worked for 15 years as a clerk in the Canyon County Assessor’s Office in Caldwell, Idaho. After retiring, she served many years as a Family History Consultant in Caldwell, Idaho and at the LDS Beehive Clothing Center in Boise, Idaho. Mary was preceded in death by her first husband Roy E. Atkinson (1955), her second husband George W. Dufur (1994), a son, Glen Lawrence Atkinson, brothers Raymond (Verletta) Hill Anderson, and Wayne Glen Anderson and a sister Faye (Norman) Eudora Anderson Hawks and three infant great granddaughters. She is survived by her children: James (Elaine) Roy Atkinson, Ilean (Ed) Panter, Elrain (Larry) Thompson, Cathy (Larry) Schiers and Floyd (Rae Nell) Anderson Atkinson. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Barbara Anderson, a brother Joseph (Edesa) Dean Anderson and many loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to express thanks to everyone who helped Mary through these last several days. A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8 PM on Thursday, February 2, 2017, at the Flahiff Funeral Home, 624 Cleveland Blvd, Caldwell, Idaho. Viewing from 9:45-10:45 AM with funeral services at the LDS (downtown bldg.) Chapel at 309 W Main St, Middleton, Idaho at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 3, 2017.
