Mary Marcia Egger
April 16th, 1925 - October 5th, 2012
Marcie Egger was born in Canton, Ohio on April 16, 1925 but spent 52 years in Tigard, Oregon where, in her own words, "we were meant to be." She passed away at home on October 5, 2012, surrounded by her family. She graduated From Aultman Hospital School of Nursing and devoted much of her professional and personal time to serving the needs of others. Marcie married Jake 66 years ago and they raised three daughters, Chris, Kathy and Jane. Marcie was the Girl Scout Leader for all of her girls and did many wonderful things with them such as taking the entire troop to the Girl Scout Center in Mexico, sailing the San Juan Islands, and a trip to the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade and Disneyland. In the course of her life she visited the four Girl Scout World Centers in England, Switzerland, Mexico and India. Marcie loved the active life and spent many years doing synchronized swimming and playing softball. When they moved to Oregon, Marcie learned to ski, climbed several mountains, and went on countless hikes and backpack trips. She loved to go canoeing and enjoyed trips to the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and Bowron Lakes Provincial Park in Canada. Marcie was great support for Jake's climbing and bicycling adventures. After her retirement, Marcie indulged in her love of travel with trips to Japan and Europe with the Portland Youth Philharmonic, and with family to China, India, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Britian and Scotland. Annual trips to Alaska or the Yukon to visit Jane and her family provided Marcie and Jake more adventures canoeing the Yukon and Stikine Rivers. Marcie was extremely active in Tigard United Methodist Church, serving on the Care Cadre, attending women's retreats, and providing transportation for members. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was a member of two book clubs and a domino club. Marcie is survived by her husband, Jake, daughters, Chris Heilman (Lee) of Oregon City, Kathy Sherwood (Kevin) of Eugene, son-in law Dick Longworth of Petersburg, Alaska; 5 grandchildren, Brandon & Bill Heilman, Corey & Julia Sherwood, Cam Longworth and one great grandchild, Mason Heilman. Also surviving are sister, Ryllis Guist and brother James Gnagy, both of Canton, Ohio, her cousin Midge Burns of St. Helena, California and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as hundreds of friends at home and abroad. A memorial service will be held at Tigard Methodist Church on Saturday November 3rd at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Marcie and her family suggest donations be made to your favorite charity or the Dr. Jane Egger Fund for the Petersburg Alaska Humane Association at www.alaskacf.org.
