Tribute & Tallent Funeral and Cremations
Mary Ann Neilson Frantz
May 14th, 1934 - February 16th, 2020
Mary Ann Neilson Frantz age 85 passed away February 16, 2020 at Atrium Pineville after a period of declining health surrounded by her devoted husband and her children. Over the last days of her life mom had time with her husband, each of her five children, grandchildren that could reach her, family and friends. She always desired this and by the grace of God this was granted to her. Mom was born May 14, 1934 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte to Alexander Joseph and Etta Catherine Jones Neilson. Mom is survived by her husband of 63 years Edward Paul Frantz; children Edward Paul Jr. and wife Janine, Michael Joseph and wife Connie, Catherine Marie Erbacher and husband Kurt , Maureen Elizabeth McClintock and husband Joe, and Eileen Patrice Wille and fianc Greg Mudrey; siblings Kathleen Potter and Patricia Neilson; sisters in law Phyllis Naughton Neilson, Carrie Langston Neilson, Ann Frantz, Carol Frantz and brother in law Tony Frantz; many nieces and nephews and the absolute joys of her life her 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren with another on the way. Our mother is predeceased by her parents; brothers John, Joseph, Father Kieran Neilson, OSB; father and mother-in-law Anthony Peter and Catherine Frantz; brother in law the Honorable Judge Robert D. Potter; niece Kathleen Neilson and nephew Brendan Neilson. Until mom's passing, she lived with our father in the Montclair Neighborhood where they raised five children. Her Catholic faith was a central part of her life and began with her education at O' Donoghue Catholic School and later Sacred Heart College. After college she worked as a medical assistant at Mercy Hospital. Her deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary would lead to multiple pilgrimages to Fatima. She was a long-time member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church and volunteered as an office receptionist. Mom was also an active volunteer in the St. Vincent De Paul Society reaching those in need and crisis. Mom was the bridge between our German and Irish heritage, and we were equally proud of our southern roots brought from the Jones side of the family. Memories from the Jones Family reunions in the country were always special to her and her brothers. Mom taught us the Golden Rule and the Ten Commandments. To say the words of the Lord's Prayer with her in her last days was an honor. She believed in the power of the words "I am sorry" and in forgiveness. She saw in each of her children uniqueness and promise and accepted our successes and failures as part of growing up. She knew we were lent to her and she gave her best to prepare us for our journeys. As a stay at home mom she ran the home with precision, a budget and purpose and she believed you would reap what you would sow. She could remove a splinter like a surgeon, make iodine justified and knew that snow days with school out meant overtime. She was always calm when a snake or other critter got loose in the house and supported each of us in our hobbies, passions and sports. Her meals were from scratch and not a box and favorites such as chicken and dumplings, beef stroganoff and spaghetti would be labeled classics. We knew exactly when Lent arrived by the tuna casserole on Fridays. She made Christmas so big often we could not sleep, and Easter brought out the Sunday best. Her discipline was fair and her line "wait to your father gets home" truly meant something. She honored her husband and we learned our parents were one when it came to rules and direction and they proved two can rule five. Her typing and clerical skills were invaluable to our dad as she helped him became a successful manufactures' rep in the southeast. We would joke that part of the reason dad kept his principles was they loved mom so much. It was confirmed with her brothers she was a bit of a "Tom Boy", was active in sports and her love of UNC Basketball and Atlanta Braves Baseball are fond memories. Her friends were very special to our mom and she loved trips to West Virginia "with the girls" and bridge night. Mom was active at the Marion Diehl Senior Center and was missed when she no longer was able to attend. After we moved on mom worked part time with Tuesday Morning and with the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections where she earned the title Republican Judge after years of dedicated service. She loved the bluebirds in the spring, the cardinals at the feeders and longed for the first hummingbird back from migration. Mom loved the month of May and she made us smile adoring dad's beautiful yard from indoors in the air conditioning. She loved the change in four seasons and growing up in North Carolina. Her knowledge of family history and Charlotte will be truly missed. Though no longer with us she prepared us to continue the journey trusting the power of faith, hope and love. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St Vincent de Paul Society are welcome. Burial will follow reception at Belmont Abbey for immediate family only.
