Memorial

November 21, 1914 – February 3, 2015 A recitation of the Holy Rosary and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Santa Cruz on Wednesday and Thursday for Mary Hutchins who passed away peacefully in Stockton, California on Feb. 3rd. She was 100 years old. Mrs. Hutchins was born in Los Banos, CA; to Antonio and Maria Souza who immigrated from The Azores and operated a dairy farm. From a very early age, she observed the hard work ethics that her family had. Mary, in turn began a career that spanned over 40 years as a dairy rancher. Her family moved their dairy to Reno where it became The Nevada Dairy. In the early 1940's the family and dairy relocated to Tracy, California. The family vacation home in Santa Cruz, became their permanent residence when Mary's parents retired from the dairy business in the late 1950's. Mary lived more than half of her life in Santa Cruz and raised her children here. She was one of the first hires of the Dream Inn as Supervisor of Housekeeping, and also worked for John Ingalls Foods, T.G. &Y, and retired with J.C. Penny in Santa Cruz. Her family will forever cherish many memories of Mary's love for riding her horses and her Harley Davidson. She had a passion for road trips, and traveled throughout the United States with her sister and road companion Adelia Souza, along with many of her nieces and nephews. She was very proud of her Portuguese heritage, and a member of SPRSI and Native Daughters of California. Mary attended Holy Cross Church and the Shrine of St. Joseph Guardian of the Redeemer Church on West Cliff Drive. She is survived by her daughter, Glynnes Hutchins, and her son John Hutchins both of Santa Cruz. She leaves a daughter-in-law Janet Hutchins of Gardnerville, Nevada and was preceded in death by her son Henry Hutchins of Gardnerville. Mary also leaves her grandchildren: Mark, Jennifer, Mike and Cori Hutchins; Ryan Hutchins, Matthew Hutchins and his wife Lauren, 7 great grandchildren, along with many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. The eldest of 8 children, she was preceded in death by all of her siblings. Mary moved to Stockton 3 years ago and the family would like to gratefully acknowledge the wonderful care she received from her niece Donnice Walter and her husband Fred, and for keeping Mary comfortable and engaged up until her final days. The mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 12th at the Shrine of St. Joseph Guardian of the Redeemer Catholic Church, 544 West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz beginning at 9:30 a.m. A recitation of the rosary will be on Wednesday evening, February 11th, at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel beginning at 7:00 p.m. Friends may pay their respects at the chapel on Wednesday from 3 p.m. until the Rosary begins.
