Mrs. Mary Susan James Schmucker Mrs. Schmucker, 97, of Greer, SC, formerly of Charlotte, NC, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Mr. J.M. James and Mrs. Edna Zachary James. Born March 17, 1916, in Albemarle, NC, she graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and La Salle Beauty College. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Mary Susan was an avid flower gardener and was known for her "green thumb". She enjoyed photography and painting and was always sharing her flowers with friends and family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter, Angie, and was always grateful she and Angie traveled across Europe to celebrate her 16th birthday. Family and friends were special to Mary, as well as her many clients in Charlotte. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Schmucker was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Schmucker, Jr., in 1973, who was a WWII veteran and purple heart recipient; her sister, Mrs. Prudence James Griffith, in 1996; brother, Jimmie Madison James, in 1987; and father-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Schmucker, Sr. Survivors include her son, James Michael Schmucker and wife, Kay, of Hickory, NC; granddaughter, Angie Kay Schmucker-Phillips and husband, Jeff, of Hickory, NC; great-granddaughter, Jessica Anne Phillips, of Raleigh, NC, and Carolina Addison Phillips, of Hickory; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Doris Schmucker Dosh and husband, Bob, of Orlando, FL and Mrs. Janet Spurlin Carpenter, of Charlotte, NC; nieces, Carol Griffith McCorkle and husband, Robert, of Greenville, SC, Sue Griffith Clement and husband, Ray, of Greer, SC, Katherine James Robertson and husband, Mark, of Matthews, NC, Donna James Miller and husband, Jack, of Matthews, NC; nephews, James Anthony Griffith, of Charlotte, NC, Michael Madison James and wife, Diana, of Charlotte, NC; great nephews, R.H. Buddy Spurrier III and wife, Shannon, Dillon Griffith, Anthony Ciucevich, Jr., Jacob Davis, Patrick James, Andrew James; great nieces, Rebecca McCorkle, Mary Kathryn McCorkle and Sarah Creech and husband, Ben. Services will be private. Mary was dear friends with Elizabeth Clarkson and requested memorials be sent to Wing Haven Gardens, 248 Ridgewood Ave., Charlotte, NC 28209.
