Mary "M R Jones" Ruth Jones

July 8th, 1953 - August 21st, 2024

Mary Ruth Jones passed away on August 21, 2024 in Sun City West, Arizona. She was at home with her husband, and left peacefully. Mary was born July 8, 1953 in Olympia, Washington, to William and Lois Thomson. She graduated from Olympia High School in 1971. She spent some time after graduation working for the State of Washington, and then entered Western Washington University. She graduated from WWU with a degree in mathematics and computer science. Shortly after graduation she started her career with Pacific Northwest Bell in Olympia as an outside plant engineer.

She married Jim Jones on March 22, 1980. She continued to work for Pacific Northwest Bell in Chehalis, Washington, where her husband was a chef. In 1983, she and her husband moved back to Olympia, where they opened Fleur de Lys, a French restaurant. In 1991, they sold the restaurant and opened The Wine Loft. In 2016, they sold the wine shop and moved to Sun City West, Arizona.

Shortly after moving to Arizona Mary discovered weaving. She became an accomplished weaver, creating exquisite scarves as well as colorful, beautiful dish towels, place mats, table runners, and much more. She made many items to order. She leaves behind a legacy of woven items that she created with creativity and love.

In Arizona, Mary also enjoyed being by the pool, and spent many afternoons and evenings relaxing there – and playing water volleyball, another new passion. She also loved to bake, and would tinker with a recipe until it was just right. Some of her creations became legendary amongst her friends.

Mary was a longsuffering Seattle Mariners fan. They gave her a few moments of joy and excitement, many moments of disappointment, and years of frustration and stress. But still she loved them; one of the few things she was able to enjoy near the end of her life was watching a Mariner’s game.

Mary was very supportive of human rights, especially LGBTQ+ rights, and advocated for equality. She also was fervent in her support of those who might be viewed as “different;” she firmly believed everyone should be treated with dignity and respect.

Mary is predeceased by her parents and her brother Bill. She is survived by her husband Jim, her sister Anne (Terrell), her brother David (Motoko), her brother John, her niece Trisha Blair (Kyle), her nephew John, her grandniece Anna Blair, and her grandnephew Jordan Lubben.

At her request there will be no service.

Maureen McGuigan

Over the last ten years I have been blessed with Mary’s friendship. She has left an indelible print upon my heart. Mary had great strength of character, was singularly determined, and was a fierce advocate when it came to standing up for the underdog (yes, even her Mariners) or championing the causes that were dear to her. She was community minded and volunteered readily, and as a result, her community was all the richer for her efforts. As strong as she was in spirit, Mary was also a big softie at heart. She could tear up listening to a moving song , or a beautifully written passage, or when pondering the plight of the less fortunate - particularly children. She loved to shop for clothing and shoes for kids when her weaving guild raised donations for a charity event, and she took great joy in shopping for toys at Christmas for the local Fire Department’s annual Christmas toy drive. I admired Mary’s drive to learn. Her creativity was matched only by her determination to master a skill, be it weaving, or baking, or creating intricate computer patterns that she could realize on her loom. She was an artist on that loom; forever a student and often a mentor. She gifted me many pieces that I will treasure forever. Mary had a quick dry wit and was practical to the point of being disarming. Glenn still cracks me up recounting an Estate Sale shopping expedition he undertook with Mary and Jim. While the guys were struggling to load up a granite garden bench into the SUV (that Jim got one heck of a deal on, of course!), Mary emerged from the house triumphant, waving a toilet plunger. Glenn doubled over with laughter as Mary announced that this was exactly what she needed. Mary bravely shared her ups and downs as she took on the challenges of her illness especially in this last year. It takes great courage to be that open and vulnerable. I admire her for that as well. I will hold forever in my heart, memories of great times around Mary and Jim’s dining room table enjoying her amazing chocolate tart, her mom’s carrot cake (which she perfected) and her honey wheat buns. I will remember always, going to outdoor concerts together at the Sun City West community center, gatherings in the ‘Fiesta Gazebo’ or relaxing in Mary’s ‘No Fly Zone’. I miss Mary already, and I grieve with Jim, and Anne and Terrell, and David and Motoko, Trisha, Kyle, Anna and Jordan. George Eliot famously wrote: “Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them.” I know I will never forget Mary, so she will forever live in my heart. With love, Maureen and Glenn Calgary, Alberta /Surprise, AZ
