MaryLou Lucille Gurr
October 16th, 1927 - August 16th, 2024
MaryLou Lucille Meador Gurr was born in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on 16 October 1927. She joined her sister, Lavon Louise Meador and her parents, William Bryan and Minnie Margarite Modrell Meador. Her father, William (aka Jack) worked the oil fields of Oklahoma at that time. Sometime after that, they moved to California and Willliam Junior Meador (aka Richard) completed their family.
Mom and Lavon were always very close. When they were young, they would board the train and go to Murphys, California to visit their grandparents. Marylou had a great sense of humor and when she wanted to get to her sister she would start singing "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane" which LaVon hated!
On 14 October 1944 Marylou married the love of her life, Kenneth William Gurr in Salinas, California. Kenneth was in the Army Air Corp and had finished pilot training during WWII. After the war, they joined with some friends and opened a small restaurant outside of Richfield, Utah. Dad was recalled into the service at the time of the Korean Conflict. With that recall came a career in the United States Air Force and led to many years of traveling from base to base every 2 or 3 years. We spent time in California, Utah, Texas, Massachusetts, Labrador, Wyoming and South Dakota. They retired to Boise, Idaho in 1969. With every new duty station, Mom created a caring and stable household. She was the master of her household and loved providing a clean, organized home, delicious meals always including the family favorite variety of cookies, pies and cakes. She continued making her famous sugar cookies for friends and family well into her 90's. She was also a master at convincing us that "this move will be an adventure" making it easier for us to leave our home and friends and prepare for new ones. I'm pretty sure she could twitch her nose and have everything we needed packed and ready to go in an instant except the one time she left the peanut butter and bread on the counter for an after school snack and the movers packed it up before we got home. They also packed the turkey in the oven. One of our fondest memories was practicing "proper English" before moving to Massachusetts from Texas. During WWII while Dad was stationed in the Philippines, Mom worked at a gas station and as a telephone operator.
Mom loved the outdoors whether it was weeding the garden and flower beds or packing up the camper for a camping and fishing expedition. She even went ice fishing in a shack in Labrador with dad and the boys.
She won a fishing derby in Massachusetts with a 5.5 lb fish. She had a true "green thumb" and could make anything grow. She took great pride in getting the first tomato of the season. If you had a question about flowers or gardening, just ask Mom, she knew the answer. She put that knowledge to work when she worked at Edwards Greenhouse in Boise for a number of years. Mom was also a master at crocheting and knitting. Her beautiful, colorful afghans and sweaters will live on in her family for years to come. She donated countless numbers to the veterans hospital and women's and children's shelters.
Another favorite thing about our Mother was that she loved people and taught us to do the same. She always spoke to the cashiers and the people around her in a store. When we were in Labrador, she worked as a volunteer for Family Services. This group met the planes landing there for refueling on the way to or from Europe. They offered coffee, snacks, diapers and whatever service was needed for those families.
Mom was the last survivor of her generation in our family; passing away on 16 August 2024 at the age of 96 in Boise, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother and sister and all of her brother and sisters in-law. She is survived by her daughter, Diana Lynne Bowman (Bruce), and sons Michael LeRoy (Jan) and Kenneth William, Jr. 10 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 30 great great grandchildren.
Our deepest "thanks" to the staff and care-givers of The Terraces in Boise for the loving care and kindness to our Mother.
There will be a private family graveside service held at Dry Creek Cemetery on August 22, 2024.
