Mary Theresa Matz

July 22nd, 1946 - October 22nd, 2020

Mary Matz passed away on October 22, 2020 at the age of 74. Mary was born on July 22, 1946 in Tucson, AZ to Thomas and Dorothy Matz. Mary attended the University of Arizona receiving her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and Master of Education. Mary moved to Nogales, AZ after completing her schooling. She built her career serving as an educator, first as a teacher then becoming the Vice Principal of Nogales High School and later Principal of a Nogales junior high school. She moved back to Tucson finishing her career as a Vice Principal of Catalina High School and Cholla High School. Mary had a love for art, owning her own specialty craft business in addition to woking with students. She had many hobbies including needle point, painting pottery, weaving, photography, and quilting. She leaves behind her detailed needle point art and beautiful quilts for her beloved family and friends to enjoy for many years to come. Mary was never fond of the Arizona heat, so when she retired, she moved to Southern California, where she also had family and friends, for the cooler weather. Mary had just recently moved back to Oro Valley. Mary is survived by her bother Thomas Mazzocco and wife Pauline, and sisters Trish Campbell and husband Vance, Paula Donley and husband Kit, and Judy Valenzuela and husband Daniel, along with 11 nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother, father, and sister Virginia Jones. Mary will be missed by her family, friends, and the many students whose lives she touched. Many family members and friends are from out of state, so due to the current COVID situation the family has decided to delay memorial services.

❤️ Mary was one of my best friends since the’90’s when we were both assistant principals together. When she lived in San Diego we talked frequently and would take our dogs in the car to visit in Tucson or San Diego. I was so glad when she decided to move back to Tucson. Our last adventure was driving through Oro Valley looking at apartments. After the coronavirus hit, we did not get together. The last time I talked to her on the phone, we were laughing and catching up. I have been desperately trying to get in touch with her and today, with a sad heart, I did a search and found her obituary. Please let me know about her memorial. I have met and visited with all her sibs, and would love to hear from them. 520.465.1189.
