Mary Cecilia Quinn Shaw
June 14th, 1918 - April 17th, 2012
Mary Cecilia Quinn Shaw, 93, our beloved mother and grandmother, of Gloversville, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, April 17, 2012. She was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1918, in Bristol, RI. Mary was predeceased in March 2010, by her sweetheart of almost 60 years, Sherman Walden "Wally" Shaw. She is survived by: Sherman W. Shaw, Jr. Dunya of Fallbrook, CA, and children VanessaDevin, and Quinn Jonathan; Dana Ruth of Thousand Oaks, CA, and children Clarence, AaronAngela, Kristin Peter and Kara; Nancy Byers Robert of Parrish, FL, and children Stacia Seth and Kenda Nate; Cindi Alvord-Zap Dave of Gloversville, and children Kimberly, Jennifer Joe and Ryan; Lyn Nash Steven of Essex, VT, and children Lauren Justin, Jameson and Abigail, Wendy Ytterboe Steve of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, and children Calvin and Hannah; and Karen Thayer Scott of Toms River, NJ, and children Joshua, Rebekah and Zachary and nine great-grandchildren. Mary was born and raised in Bristol, RI, the sixth child of Daniel and Mary C. Quinn, immigrants who arrived on the Lusitania from Donegal, Ireland. She attended parochial schools, and then worked at US Rubber in Bristol. After marrying Wally in 1950, they lived in Stoneham, MA and moved to Gloversville in 1967. Mary was a devoted wife and mother. Her Irish heritage made sure her kids wore green, and pinned Irish linen handkerchiefs to their skirts on St. Patrick's Day. With her love of music, she often had a song on her lips and a dance in her step as she sung out an old Irish melody. In her younger years, she dressed fastidiously, making sure her gloves, shoes and pocketbook matched. Finding great bargains at Filene's Basement in Boston was a favorite hobby! She enjoyed collecting recipes and cooked healthy food before it was in vogue. When thinking of desserts, we fondly remember "The Mary Shaw Special"! Walking and swimming at the Y kept her "fit" well into her eighties. Weekly ladies' Bible studies were always on her calendar of events, and for many years, she was active in leadership of the area Christian Women's Club. As a member of Perth Bible Church, she volunteered where needed, and was often in the nursery because of her love for babies. Singing the old hymns and hearing her children play the piano were her delight. We remember our mom for her love for family, nurturing spirit, friendliness and gift of mercy. She laughed and made friends easily, greeting everyone with her vibrant smile. Enjoying the company of others, even in her later years as she battled Alzheimer's, she perked up when people were around. We wish to thank the staff at the Fulton County Infirmary for their attentive care. A private graveside service is scheduled at the convenience of the family at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Arrangements are made by John Stewart of Walrath and Stewart. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Perth Bible Church, 1863 County Highway 107, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
