July 23rd, 1936 - August 5th, 2008
Mary Anne Velz, 72, of Christman Place, died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital following a brief illness. Born on July 23, 1936 in Berlin, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Roland and Rose Skelly Velz. An area resident for many years, Mary Anne graduated from Cortland State Teachers College. She was employed as an elementary teacher for over 30 years at St. Mary's Institute until her retirement recently. Mary Anne was a dedicated and inspiring educator who worked tirelessly to make sure that her students succeeded. She will be sadly missed by her family, S.M.I. family and friends. Her loving family includes her brothers, Dr. Thomas S. Velz and his wife Elizabeth of Amsterdam and Peter J. Velz and his wife Rosemary of PA; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial in her memory will be offered on Friday, August 8, 2008 at 11 o'clock at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, 427 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny's Corner Road, Amsterdam NY 12010. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
