Maurice John Plasse, Jr.
May 31st, 1928 - January 9th, 2020
Maurice John Plasse, Jr., lifetime resident of Jackson, CA, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at the age of 91. Maurice graduated from Jackson High School in 1946 and worked for Winton Lumber before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1952. During a brief leave in 1954 Maurice, and his bride Caraleta, were married in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church before he left to serve the remainder of his service in Japan as a diesel mechanic. After returning home in 1956, the couple moved to the family homestead on French Bar Rd to begin their family and operate the family cattle ranch. Maurice was an active member of the community where he served on the Jackson Unified School Board for 20 years. He and his wife Caraleta were strong supporters of the Amador Cancer Van, now known as STARS, not only making and delivering hundreds of box lunches for the annual Valentines fund raiser, they helped raise thousands of dollars through an annual auction during their summer BBQ’s at Silver Lake. In 1968 Maurice and family decided to re-open Plasse’s Resort. He balanced his time between resort operator and cattle ranching until 1976 when he devoted his time to the expansion of the resort. Maurice and Caraleta were known throughout the county for their hospitality, opening their gates to visitors from near and far for over 30 years. Not only did they open the resort during the summer, their hospitality extended to members of the 88 Spur Riders Snowmobile Club during the 1970’s and 1980’s. Upon his retirement from resort ownership in 2000, Maurice enjoyed spending time chatting with friends on the front porch of the family cabin, sharing stories with grandchildren and great grandchildren and even took a trip to France where he visited his grandmother’s family home. Maurice is survived by his wife, Caraleta Plasse; daughter, Doreen Plasse-Gammon and her husband Mark, of Washoe Valley, NV; sons, John Plasse and his wife Jeannie, of Jackson, CA, and Eduard Plasse and his wife Sandra, of Fallon, NV; sister, Suzanne Plasse; and nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday, Jan 14th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church followed by a reception at St. Katherine Drexel’s. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
