“Finally, realize that your ultimate goal is not victory, but relationship with God himself” - Erwin W. Lutzer Maxie Donald Fisher, 87, of West Columbia, SC, died Monday August 16, 2021. Born August 5, 1934, in Buffalo, SC, Maxie was the eldest son of Chester and Louise Fisher. Surviving, include his loving spouse, Betty Jane Shealy Fisher, are brother, Larry; and sons, Peter, Michael (Erin), and Jeffrey (Chrissy). Pop was grandfather to Zachary, Katie (Jordan), Miles, Chase (Sarah), Blake, Andrew, Hannah, Abigail, and Isabella Fisher. In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Fudge Fisher, and his brother, Billy. Maxie was a member of West Side Baptist Church in West Columbia. He served as Deacon and enjoyed reading and listening to God’s word. Maxie attended Brookland Cayce High School and was voted “Mr. Hustle”. Max played basketball and baseball. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy Construction Battalion “Seabees”. Upon completion of basic training in San Diego, CA, his Navy tour included islands in the Caribbean while working on critical base infrastructure. This also included a stint on the island country of Barbados. Max later attended LeTourneau Tech (University) in Texas and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1965 BSME. Max worked for Westinghouse in Hampton, SC and Continental Can in Augusta, GA. He moved back to West Columbia and formed Service Steel Company, Inc., later merging with C. L. Fisher Ornamental Ironworks. With Fisher Iron, he served as vice president and president until 2000. The company worked on several projects in the southeast for public and private entities. Military installations, including Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Jackson, SC, Red River, TX, and Naval Weapons Station, Charleston, SC. Other work in SC included Anchor Continental, Boyd and Company, Cayce Quarry, City of Columbia, Doolittle Hangar, USS Yorktown, and USC facilities, including Williams-Brice Stadium. Maxie loved tomatoes and was an avid gardener. He loved the outdoors, either hunting with “Big D” at the Kingville Tract, or fishing at the Stumphole Landing. Maxie loved his family, especially all of his grandchildren, attending ball games, concerts, and celebrations. The family would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Pearson, who cares for Maxie’s brother, Larry. The funeral will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, August 27, 2021, at West Side Baptist Church, 2100 Platt Springs Road, West Columbia, SC 29169. Visitation will be held on Thursday August 26, 2021 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Family Life Center of West Side Baptist.
