Aspen Mortuaries - Lakewood
Maxine M. McCarthy
February 28th, 1922 - December 14th, 2016
Feb. 28, 1922-Dec.14, 2016 Maxine Margaret (Dommann) McCarthy of Arvada, CO was proceeded in death by her husband Officer Ed McCarthy, parents Walter and Louise Dommann, brother Calvin Dommann, and sister Genevieve Miller. Sister Marcella died before her birth. She is survived by son Edward "Skip" McCarthy (Barbara) of Phoenix, AZ, daughters Marilou Griego (Tom) of Westminster, CO, and Patricia McCarthy of Arvada, CO. Also by grandchildren Patrik Griego, Katharine Griego, David McCarthy, Erinn McCarthy, Finnegan Gould, John and Robert Martenson. Maxine was born in Columbus, NE and grew up in Hastings, NE. She attended K-8 Lutheran school and graduated from Hastings High in 1939. She had one year of business college before working at the Naval Ammunition Depot. There she met Ed, a marine from Boston, and they married in 1943. Ed Jr. "Skip" was born while Ed was stationed in the South Pacific during WW II. After the war, they had daughters Marilou and Patricia. Ed's playing in the NE Independent Baseball League took the family to McCook, where he was a pitcher and Deputy Sheriff for seven years. While on vacation in Colorado they fell in love with the area and soon moved to Loveland where Ed worked as a policeman. From Loveland they moved to Broomfield and then Arvada, where they spent the rest of their lives. Maxine and Ed were very social and active in Arvada's community. They belonged to numerous clubs and organizations, including the DAV, VFW, and American Legion, where they started "Cooper's Troopers", a marine group. They were also active in the Elks, Lions, Optimists and the Arvada Volunteer Fire Dept. They enjoyed camping and boating. They loved to travel and visited England, Ireland, German, Austria, France, Guam, and many other countries. Maxine was proud to have visited every state in the U.S. but one. At age 91 Maxine's grandchildren Patrik and Katharine took her on a dream cruise to Alaska. She loved spending time at her brother Calvin's cabin in Wyoming's Snowy Range and visiting Ed's family in the Boston area. After her kids were in college Maxine took a job as an inspector at the Coors bottling plant in Golden. She never met a stranger. She stayed socially active throughout her retirement. She and Ed swam two to three times per week at a community pool where they met some of their best buddies and called them Ed's "swim team." She was still swimming twice a week until March, when she fell and broke her leg at home. Maxine loved dogs, reading (mystery and romance), watching Jeopardy and CSI. She also loved watching (and often complaining about) her Broncos and Rockies. But most of all she loved family, especially her grandkids. She was opinionated, spunky, and very funny. She loved Ed's jokes no matter how many times she heard them (often), and she loved when he sang to her. They were a great team. She reunited with Ed just an hour and a half before what would have been his 95th birthday. She always said to keep your old friends, but make sure to have younger ones, too. She kept this saying by her bed: "I have no yesterdays Time took them away Tomorrow may not be, But I have today." She was a wonderful woman who was dearly loved by many and she will be truly missed.
