Melvalee was born on a farm outside of Ponca City, Oklahoma on Friday, September 14th, 1928 to Melvan E. Anstine and Esther Ruth Gideon Anstine, both deceased. She was the fifth of their seven children: two older brothers - Melvan Wayne and Albert Arthur "Curly", two older sisters - Nelle Ruth Killian and Lois Sacherson, and two younger sisters- Marjorie Klahn and surviving her is Kalyn Jenson. In 1942 the family moved to Milwaukie, Oregon. She graduated from Milwaukie High School in 1946 and went to work for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company, retiring with 34 years of service from US West Communications. In 1956 Melvalee married J. Thomas Callanan, they later divorced. She raised four children as a single mother, two sons and two daughters-Michael and Steven Callanan, Laura Potter and Patricia Fletcher. She was blessed with 7 grandchildren- Tyler Douglas and his wife Heather, Joshua Potter, Dakota Callanan, Ashley Wright, Alexandra Fletcher, Laura Fletcher. Melvalee was also blessed with four great-grandchildren - Korey Dawson, Emma Wright, Jacob and Hailey Douglas. Preceding her in death was her oldest daughter Laura Ruth Potter, granddaughter Brittney Rene Potter, and grandsons Bradley Brooks Potter, Caleb Andrew Potter, and Korey Callanan.
