Melvin "Meir Aliya" Allen Horwitz

Melvin Horwitz. 78, passed away on July 9, 2014 in Las Vegas, NV. He was born January 10, 1936 in Chicago, IL, where he attended elementary school. He then moved to Gary, IN for high school. He was a proud Korean war veteran serving from 1955 to 1957. Mel graduated from pharmacy school at Purdue University in 1965 and had a long career as a pharmacist including director of pharmacy at Gottlieb Hospital in Melrose Park IL. Mel was co-owner of 4 pharmacies in nursing homes and held various other retail pharmacist positions. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Jane, son Irwin (Sujin), daughter Gail (Darrell) Grimmett, brother in law Alan (June) Shulman, sister in law Gloria (Shell) Scott, nephews Alan (Cindy) Horwitz, Paul (Margaret) Horwitz and many extended family members and treasured friends he considered his family. He was preceded in death by his parents Goldie and Harry, his brother Gerald and his nephew Gregg. He and his wife moved to Las Vegas in 1996 where Mel had '''the time of his life" living in Sun City Summerlin and enjoying his new friends, golf, dining, cruising, etc. His courage and strength in dealing with his health problems was an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace, Mel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Veteran's Cemetery in Boulder City, NV.
