Michael Kevin Griffin, 60, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013. Mike also known as ""Griff"" was born may 5, 1953 in Long Beach, California to Kathleen E. and Captain Jack Griffin. He was a graduate of Herndon High School and Elon University, where he played baseball. Griff was a teacher and coached football, baseball and basketball in Virginia, as well as officiating high school football. He later entered a career with Phillip Morris Tobacco Co., where he worked his way up through the company. He retired after 30 years of hard work and devoted faithful service. Mike loved sports and being outdoors. He had a true love for baseball. He devoted many years of coaching in the Roanoke Valley community. He coached numerous All-Star teams, including many district championship teams along with a Big League team that advanced all the way to the Big League World Series. He loved the Challengers program, where he announced the games in humorous fashion for the players and parents. Griff had a big heart, loved to laugh and smile. He had a true gift to make those around him laugh and smile as well. Mike was a devoted family man and wonderful father. He loved his family and provided for them in every way imaginable. He will always be remembered for his big smile, telling stories, being funny and working hard. He lived a great life and did things the ""right way"". There will never be another person like him and he will be missed dearly. He will always be in our hearts. May he rest in peace in Heaven. He is survived by his mother; sons, Kevin and Dustin; several brothers and sisters, nephews, nieces and cousins; and his newest grandson, Michael Kevin Griffin. Calling hours will be from 6 until 8pm Friday, October 18th at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home in Cocoa Beach. As a colleague of Griff's at PM, I can honestly say I have never, nor do I expect to meet a man quite like him. Ever the jokester, his humor at work was filled with honesty and strong convictions for doing the right things, and doing things right. My sincerest condolences to the Griffin family, may his spirit be with you always.

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free, I'm following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all.I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I've found that peace at the close of the day.If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss.Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My Life's been full, I savored much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch,Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.-AnonymousRest in Peace, Uncle Mike.

My thoughts and prayers are with Kevin and Dusty on the loss of their father. He was always so proud of his two sons and spoke of them often. He truly was that one of a kind person that I am blessed to have had the pleasure of knowing and working with for many years. I am sure by now Griff has the angels laughing along with him! Bless you!

I wanted to express my condolences to the family of Mike Griffin.Mike was my boss for several years and even longer than that he was my friend. As many know there was and will be no one like Griff again. His passions ran deep and he had a big heart that he shared with many. He always made me laugh and sometimes drove me a little crazy but he was my friend and I understood him. Griff was always proud of his family. To his sons, Kevin & Dusty I remember many of your childhood stories that your Dad told, he loved you very much.Mike, I will miss you friend.

The old days were really something else--what times we had with baseball, parties, etc. You guided many boys in Roanoke to become the young men they are today. Rest in peace friend. I worked for Mike Griff Griffin for a good portion of my career with PM. I will always remember his passion for his work, and his love for his family. When I had to take off from work, if I needed to do something family wise Griff never said no, he was so good about not making you feel quilty, always said work could wait but family can't. This is just one example of how understanding he always was with his people, always laughing about something crazy, he will live on in my mind as a one of a kind person. I pray that his two sons and little grandson will have his passion for life.
