Michael David Kirk
July 3rd, 1936 - June 17th, 2024
Dr. Michael David Kirk, DVM and longtime resident of Reno, Nevada passed away at his daughter’s home in Eaton, Colorado on June 17, 2024.
He was born on July 3, 1936 to William F. and Betty D. (Harley) Kirk in Kansas City, Missouri. He spent his younger years working on the Ladder Ranch in New Mexico where he met and later married Ethel Rhae Mackey on April 5, 1956. He moved his family to Colorado Springs where he worked with Aircraft Mechanics. Shortly after that, he was accepted to Veterinary School at Colorado State University. While attending college he was a horse shoer and showed Arabian horses for several owners in the Fort Collins area. In 1970, he graduated from CSU with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, he moved his family to Reno, Nevada to set up his Equine Veterinary Practice of 50 years.
He was actively involved with the Nevada State Fair. He advocated for the Wild Horse Project and served on the Nevada Agricultural Foundation, as well as being a member of the Nevada Veterinary Accreditation Program.
Mike loved horses, raising Santa Gertrudis cattle, trap shooting, fishing, skiing and country music.
He is survived by his daughters; Donna (David) Clifford and Faye (James) Fanning, his four grandchildren; Kyle, Kevin (Tay), Kayla (Mike) and Dustin, four great-grandchildren; Kyler, Kayson, Keaton and Mia, his brother Phil (Connie) Kirk, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel in December 2023 and his parents.
He will be remembered along with his late wife, Ethel during private family services.
