It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Michael Steven Pemberton (77) at his home in Salinas. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and loyal friend to all. Born in Salinas in 1945, Michael grew up in the close-knit community of Alisal. He graduated from Salinas High, then joined the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam war. After his tour in Vietnam, Michael returned to Salinas where he was a stitcher for Hansen farms, traveling the produce circuit from Salinas to the Imperial Valley. After the death Al Hansen, Mike went to work for the U.S Postal Service. Ever the dedicated employee, customers loved seeing his little blue mail truck coming up the road. He would always say, “Rain or shine, mail has to be delivered!” He was the definition of a family man. Mike (or “Pierre the Chef as he was known at the grill) spent most of his off-time in the backyard hosting the best pool parties for his kids, extended family, and anyone else who showed up to Mike and Big D’s busy north Salinas home. Lake trips with his boat “Rambunctious” was another one of his favorite pastimes. He loved camping at San Antonio, waterskiing, and pulling the kids on the tube. Mike was also a lifelong Elvis fan and anyone who knew him, knew of his infamous “Elvis room”. Michael loved his immediate and extended family and was always the go-to person when someone was in need of a helping hand. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him Mike was proceeded in death by his mother Bee, father Art, and daughter Jodi. He is survived by the love of his life, Dieanna (to whom he was married for 50 years), daughters Michael D (Nick) and Stephanie (Jay), son Johnny, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his siblings, Whitey and Lloyd, and a host of cherished relatives and friends. Healey Mortuary

At Healey, we treat our Salinas Valley community members like family. Our story begins after World War II when Veteran Herbert C. Healey hoped to find a way to continue to meaningfully help his county and community grow. He and his wife founded Salinas Valley Mortuary in 1956 to help serve the families in the Salinas Valley area. Their lifelong mission was to unselfishly serve area families based on their strong, trusting relationship with their community – something we honor to this day almost seven decades years later....
