Michael “Mickey” John Weldon (1947-2024)

Michael “Mickey” John Weldon, 76, of Lake Forest Park, Washington, died on September 7th, 2024 after his health declined sharply while battling stage IV cancer.

He was born in Butte, Montana in 1947 to Eleanor Killian and John “Jack” Weldon. He had a difficult youth marked by the loss of his father at three months old. Despite the struggles, he found joy as a boy scout in the wilderness of Montana and sports including swimming, speed skating, and “wrassling.” He attended Boy’s Central where his love of learning and endless questions often earned him the ire of the Christan Brothers who taught him.

After graduation, Michael moved to the “big” city of Seattle. Within six months, he met his future wife Kathy Lord on a blind date that involved forgetting to pay the check and his car breaking down. This year marked their 58th year together.

He got his first job at the US Postal Service as a “temporary, part-time, not to exceed 90 days holiday mail handler.” He would retire from the USPS forty years later after a transformative career that spanned sorting mail, HR, safety and health, and technology. His time in HR included learning ASL to help provide opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing workers to be integrated into the postal service. In safety and health, he helped spread knowledge of CPR during its infancy as a life-saving technique. His keen interest in technology and computing led him to projects that innovated mail processing, automating the barcoding that is still being used today.

In retirement, Michael enjoyed hobbies including bicycling on the Burke Gilman and tinkering with every new computer technology. Friends, relatives, and random strangers alike could always expect a lengthy presentation of his new computing “toys.”

As much as that tech brought him childlike joy, we know in our hearts that he was proudest and happiest with the family he built and fought for in his final years. He is survived and loved by his wife Kathy Lord Weldon, and his daughters Christine Weldon, Tracy Weldon, Shannon Weldon (Lyz Towner), Erin Weldon, and Megan Weldon.

There will be a rosary at 10:30 am followed by a funeral Mass at 11 am at St. Mark Catholic Church in Shoreline on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society.
