Mike McKensley Smiley

SMILEY, Sr., Mike McKensley, 79, of Tampa, Florida, passed away on February 5, 2017. Mr. Smiley was born on September 6, 1937, in Opp, Alabama, and moved to Tampa, Florida as a teenager with his mother, brothers, and sisters. Mike was a proud “Sea Bee”, a.k.a. Petty Officer, in the United States Navy Reserve for over 20 years, and visited Good News Baptist Church. He began working for the City of Tampa at the age of 17, and worked his way up to Chief Operator of the Howard Curren Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant, from where he retired after 40 years. Mike then struck out on his own with Smiley Enterprises, an environmental services company. Mike was an avid fisherman, and treasured spending time with his family. He very much loved his family, and was an excellent provider. He will be forever missed. Mr. Smiley is preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Annie Smiley; his son, Michael Renee Smiley; and his sister, Bonnie Madison. Mr. Smiley is survived by his wife of 43-and-a-half years, Cheryl L. Smiley; his children, Vickie Walker, Kathy Smiley, Annette Harris, Juliette Smiley, Michelle Smiley-Wells (David), Mike Smiley, Jr., Joseph Sacco (Bonnie), Betsy Lee (Charles), DeeDee Madison, and Tawnya Smiley; his brothers, Fred Smiley (Joan), and James Smiley (Janet); his sisters, Willacile Vinson (Otis), and Dorothy Smiley; as well as his many nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Services for Mr. Mike Smiley will take place on Saturday at 9:00 AM at Florida Mortuary, with internment to follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park.
