Naomi Ruth Hyman
July 30th, 1920 - October 25th, 2014
Naomi Ruth Hyman, 94, of Coburg Village, Rexford, NY, passed away Saturday morning October 25, 2014 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. Naomi was born on July 30, 1920 the daughter of the late Samuel and Etta Olender Kupferberg. She was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam and was a 1937 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School. She attended Oneonta State College and the Amsterdam School of Commerce. As a child she enjoyed going to Galway Lake where her father had built a summer cottage. She enjoyed fishing and swimming. She also enjoyed visiting her cousins at Sacandaga Park where she worked as a caddie on the golf course and as an usher at the local summer theater. She was active in High School and was an avid golfer throughout her life. Mrs. Hyman was employed as manager of the former Kings Drug Store in Amsterdam. Naomi also was a well known and established artist in the area. She started taking art lessons in her forties and began a career in oriental brush painting. She exhibited her work at Art Shows in Florida and in Upstate New York winning many awards. Naomi moved to Coberg Village in Rexford 10 years ago. She was very active in craft groups, volunteered in the country store, played bridge and competed in golf tournaments. She was a member of the Congregation Sons of Israel Synagogue in Amsterdam. She was also a member of the Daughters of Jacob Sisterhood, the Past President of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Mohawk Valley Heritage Association, Amsterdam public Library, Schenectady Museum, the Amsterdam Art Association, Sumi-e Society of America and was a Red Cross Volunteer. She married Albert A. Hyman on October 5, 1941. He passed away on September 28, 2003. Survivors include her daughter Elaine J. Hyman of Maryland and her son Bruce M. (Natalie J.) Hyman of Scotia, NY. Grandchildren, Kurt David (Jamie) Olender, Michelle Joy (Brad) May, Lisa Harris Olender, Shari Rose Hyman and Scott Jon Hyman. Great-grandchildren, Emma Kate Olender, Benjamin Jacob Olender and Carsyn Levitt. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her brother Jack Cooper. The Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 27, 2014 at 10:00A.M. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam with Rabbi Markowitz presiding. Interment will follow in Temple of Israel Cemetery, Cranesville, NY. Family will receive relatives and friends on Monday prior to the funeral service beginning at 9:00A.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Congregation Sons of Israel, 355 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY 12010. Friends are invited to visit the home of Bruce and Natalie on Monday and Tuesday 7:00 to 9:00PM.
