Nellie Mitchem Abernathy of Charlotte passed away peacefully on November 5, 2014. She was 86. She is the daughter of the late Wade Worthy Mitchem, Sr. and Kate (Lewis). Nell attended CPCC and was retired from Celanese Corp in Charlotte after 33 years. She was an expert seamstress who loved her family, enjoyed dancing and loved the beach. She had a fantastic sense of humor and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her loving daughters, Carolyn (Patty) Lane of Charlotte, Mary Brumley and Gary of Charlotte, Jayne Moore and Jack of Fort Mill, SC, Teresa Napier and Mike of Fort Mill, SC, and her son Henry Abernathy of Charlotte. She is survived by her sisters, Bert, Peggy, Mache, and Becky. She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she adored, Amy Brumley and Laramin, Dana Lane, Maggie Capitano and Josh, James Vanover and Claire, Mark Brumley and Crystal, Amber Moore and T.J., Tiffany Hahne and Jeff, Molly Napier, and Mackenzie Napier. Her beautiful Great-grandchildren, Haley, Tyler, Jasmine, Jeremiah, Joshua, Zoe, Mina, and Gavin. Services will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 2pm at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte. The family will receive visitors from 1-2. Chaplain Parker will officiate. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
