Nelson Cartagena, 58, of Wall St. Amsterdam, passed away Monday, April 22, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam with his loving family at his side. Born in Salina, Puerto Rico on May 28, 1954 a son of Ramon Cartagena and Francesca Davila. He attended local schools in Puerto Rico. Nelson worked for many years in Maintenance for the Amsterdam Housing Authority and Centro Civico in Amsterdam. Mr. Cartagena enjoyed Spanish Music and Salsa dancing. He enjoyed cooking Spanish Creo Cooking from Puerto Rico. He was a communicant of the former St. Michael the Archangel Church and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. Nelson was an avid boxer and boxing fan. Survivors include his loving mother, Francesca Davila of Amsterdam. Brothers and sisters, Mercedes Todd Tymula of Summit, NY, Angel Evelina Rivera of Florida, Basilia Joseph Ortiz of Florida, Henry Iris Pacheco of Scotia, NY Orlando Rene Pacheco of Amsterdam and Gloria Wayne Lampkin of Fonda, NY. His companion, Nelsida Polanco of Amsterdam, NY. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held on Monday April 29, 2013 at 11:00A.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY., with Father John Medwid presiding. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.
