Nicholas J. DiCaprio Sr., 89, of Lodge Street, died Wednesday morning at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam. Born on the family farm in Queen Ann Road, Town of Florida, New York on August 20, 1916, he was the son of the late Alfred and Pauline Coluni DiCaprio. He was a life long resident and attended local schools. Nick was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and was in the battles and campaigns of the Naples-Feggia, Rome-Arne and Tunisia. He was employed by Niagara Mohawk as a gas foreman in Albany and later Amsterdam for 33 years. Nick was a member of the National American Legion and was a communicant of St. Michael?s the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. He enjoyed working, especially in his vegetable and flower garden and always looked forward to a good card game. Nick loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren. He was first married to the former Catherine Iacono, who died in 1995. On July 5, 1997 he married the former Eda Reali. Besides his wife Eda, he is survived by two sons, Nicholas J. DiCaprio of Amsterdam and Robert G. DiCaprio and his wife Lisa of Amsterdam; a step-daughter, Roberta Schlicht and her husband Robert of Amsterdam; four brothers, Peter DiCaprio, Alfred DiCaprio, John DiCaprio and Joseph DiCaprio all of Amsterdam; four sisters, Nancy Gentile, Nadel Gentile and Mary Donato all of Hollywood, Florida and Jennie Hall of Johnstown; three grandchildren, Amy, Diana and Page 2 DiCaprio Gaetano; two step-grandchildren, Robert Jr. and Melissa; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Nick was predeceased by two sisters, Jean D?Alassandro and Julia Martini. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2005, at 10:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial and Military Honors to take place at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael?s Roman Catholic Church, Grove Street, Amsterdam, New York with the Rev. Lawrence J. Decker as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Michael?s Cemetery in Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Nick?s memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in care of the funeral home.
