"Norma Ruth Hitchcock, 85, of Beekman Drive in Agawam, MA, died peacefully on Friday, January 24. Born in Palmer, December 26, 1928, she was the daughter of Raymond and Dorothy (Keyes) Hemphill. Norma's mother passed away during her grade school years. She was fortunate to also be raised by her step-mother, Mildred Chase Hemphill. Mildred met Raymond during his CCC work in her hometown of North Troy, VT, and Norma returned there for visits often. Norma was the widow of her husband of 53 years, John 'Jack' Hitchcock in 2000. She will be deeply missed by her children, Linda Hitchcock LeClair and husband William of Westfield, James Hitchcock of West Springfield and Alan Hitchcock and his wife Susan of Feeding Hills. Another son, Richard Hitchcock passed away in 1998 at the age of 49. She also leaves her beloved 5 grandchildren, Amy, Dan, Matt, Allison and Kim. Her niece Barbara Hitchcock of Fiskdale and nephew George Hitchcock of Truro are also mourning Norma's passing. Norma and Jack were key contributors on the building committee for Foster Memorial Church in Sixteen Acres and also taught in the Sunday School. Norma was also an active participant at all the schools her children attended. Her lifelong love of dogs was one of the topics of conversations during visits with family and friends. Her beautiful Irish Setter, Lady, was her companion when her mother passed and she was always happy with a dog (or 11). Deena, Daffy, Tina and Katy are a few of her many canine companions. Norma spent 3 years under the care of the wonderful staff of Heritage Hall North. The companionship of the staff and residents was a joy during her stay. Calling hours will be Friday, January 31, from 4:00 - 7:00pm at the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home, followed with a memorial service at 7:00pm. For those wishing, please make donations in Norma's name to: Dakin Animal Shelter at Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, PO Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101. "
