She was born September 8, 1920 to Ernest and Mary (Gerhardt) Hardy in the farm house at 19 Hardy Road, Enfield. She graduated from Enfield High School in 1938, worked for several years at the Hanover Inn, then for Remington Arms in Bridgeport, CT. While there she learned to fly with plans to join the Women's Air Force Service Pilots (W.A.S.P.). Those plans changed when she met Charles S. Cummings II, chief ballistics engineer at Remington, and they were married in 1944. She devoted the next 30 years to her home and family. She and Charles returned to live on the Hardy property in 1968 and enjoyed 30 years working to preserve the land for the wildlife. She loved animals, was an outstanding cook and gardener, and was a member of the Bird and Garden Club in Canaan. She and Charles were members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hanover. Charles preceded her in death in 2002 and she is survived by two daughters, Cory Cummings-Snow of Deerfield, NH, and C Suzanne Brown (Tom) of Tacoma, WA; a son Charles S. Cummings III (Lena) of Scotch Plains, NJ; four grandsons and two great-granddaughters. A short memorial service will be held in Enfield the end of September. For information contact Suzanne at (253) 847-2507 or Dale Hardy (nephew) at (603) 531-6495.
