Oliver Thornton Oliver Cromwell Thornton December 2, 1929 - July 31, 2016 Oliver Cromwell Thornton, 86, died July 31, 2016. Oliver was born in Berkeley and raised in North Hollywood California. He moved his family to Oregon in 1962 where he remained until his death. He was loved by all and survived by his daughter, Linda Thornton Nishioka (Gary), grandson Ryder Nishioka, niece Rachel Armstrong (Jim and family), stepsons Robert Thornton (Jackie) and Kirk Thornton (Julie), grandchildren Sean, Chloe and ex-wife Patricia Gripp. A man, who loved being the center of attention, yet served his country and the public his entire life starting with the US Army during the Korean War, Los Angeles County Marshal’s Department and the US Postal Service. After receiving his Master’s degree in Social Work he became a Probation Officer and finally retired after 10 years as a Lane County Juvenile Counselor with Serbu formally known as Skipworth. Although he spent the majority of his life dealing with those who had committed crimes, he believed in education and rehabilitation rather than punishment. His goal in life was to help others, especially those less fortunate. An avid cyclist he worked at Collins Bike Shop in Eugene, established friendships and went on many cycling adventures. He greatly appreciated the arts, music, travel, laughter and a spirited political discussion. As a young man, he did a hell of a handstand. All those whose life he touched will sorely miss him. All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on. Per Oliver’s request there will not be any memorial service. For those that wish to donate in his name, please do so to Planned Parenthood or the American Civil Liberties Union. Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary.
