Omar Wilson, Jr. formerly of Melrose, Florida died on Friday, June 8, 2012 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Born on February 28, 1924 in Marshall, Texas, he is the son of the late Ethel Marsh Wilson and Omar Wilson, Sr., formerly of Marshall, Texas. He moved to Tampa in 1937 where he attended local schools and the University of Tampa before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1942. After serving four years in the Army as an aircraft electronics instructor, he returned to college at the University of Florida in Gainesville where he graduated in 1950. In college he was active in his fraternity, Sigma Chi, and maintained that association throughout his life as a Life Loyal Sig. He moved to Venice in 1966 as a Local Manager of General Telephone Company's business office. After some twenty years with General Telephone, he entered the stock brokerage business and was assistant branch manager for Raymond James & Associates until his retirement. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Venice-Nokomis Elks Lodge, the No-Vel American Legion Post, and the Venice United Church of Christ. During his community service he was past President of the Optimist Club of Tampa, past Lt. Governor of the Optimist Clubs of Florida, past President of the United Fund of South Sarasota County, past President of the South Sarasota County Committee of 100, past president of the Venice-Nokomis Rotary Club, past Vice President of the Industrial Development Council of Sarasota County and was awarded the Community Service Award in 1972 by the Board of Directors of General Telephone Company of Florida. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Whitaker Wilson. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Wilson Hudson, a grandson, Donald E. Hudson, II and granddaughter, Jessica J. Hudson, all of St. Petersburg, and a sister, Nancy Wilson, of St. Petersburg. He is also survived by step-sons, Brittain L. Belyeu of St. Petersburg and J. Rey Belyeu of Umatilla. As well as step-grandsons, Tyler D. Belyeu and step-granddaugter, Taylor Nicole Belyeu. He was predeceased by a third step-son, William Rex Belyeu. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. Services will be private. David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Central Avenue Chapel in St. Petersburg is serving the family. Service Information
