Patricia Ann Lewine
January 31st, 2020
Obituary Born July 5, 1939 in Queens, New York, Patricia (Slocum) Lewine was the oldest of three children born to John (“Jack”) Francis Slocum and Dorothy (Orgain) Slocum. She died on Friday, January 31st, 2020. She left behind her siblings John Francis Slocum, Jr and his wife Ann and Margaret (“Meg”) Cecilia Slocum Lambert and their families. Known by everyone as “Pat”, she graduated from Great Neck High School, where her father graduated and her children would eventually all go. She worked for many years at Great Neck North Junior High School, where many students there considered her their second mother and she coached the girls’ softball and basketball teams. In 1984, Pat crossed the country to study at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California where she completed the extended student program and began working there in 1986. Pat climbed the ranks of Esalen quickly. She moved to the Programs Department in 1987, became Personnel Manager in 1995 and ended up co-managing the entire program for seven years, becoming Programs Director in 2002. She retired from Esalen two years later and lived out her life on the Monterey Peninsula. Pat was well known for her keen sense of humor and for the immense capacity to stay grounded in the midst of crisis. She met everyone with empathy, common sense and a wonderful ability to truly listen. Whether she was coaching the girl’s Junior High basketball team or running the Programs Department at Esalen, she did so with balance and a reassuring presence. Pat Lewine was an inspiration to countless people during her lifetime and touched the lives of many – especially those she counseled in the bereavement groups she led for parents of deceased children. She will be sorely missed. Surviving Pat are her ex-husband, David Lewine and 4 of their children: Steven Michael and his wife Julie, Robert A., Julie Ann, and Barbara Ann and her husband Duncan Short; 12 of her grandchildren: Christopher and his wife Natalie, Nicolas and his wife Pallavi, Gabrielle and her fiancé Jimmy Harvey, Shelby, Patricia Marie and her husband Jason Martin, Torianna, Dominique, Annick and her husband Mentor Sadikaj, Daniella, Natasha and her husband Eddie Marquez, Maggie and David James (“DJ”); and her 3 great-grandchildren: Leila, Leonardo and Rosalie. She was predeceased by her beloved son Daniel James in February, 2000 and by her grand-daughter Madison in May, 2018.
