Paul Marshman Carrick III

March 9, 1948 - April 15, 2023 Family and Friedns will gather on Sunday June 11 to say farewell to long time Santa Cruz Mountain Resident Paul Carrick III, who passed away with friends and family by his side on April 15 at Good Samaritan Hospital following complications from an unexpected heart attack. Paul graduated from San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara in 1965, then attended the University of California at San Diego, earning a degree in Mathematics. In 1972, he joined The Children of God through which he traveled extensively internationally. Paul returned to California in 1976, where he earned master’s degrees at San Jose State University in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He then worked for Intel, where he served as a project manager for the then cutting edge 486 chip. At age 42, Paul retired and took up full-time residence on property he had bought in the Santa Cruz mountains. He remained passionate about the sciences and mathematics until the time of his passing. Paul loved nature, spending time outdoors, and ran and hiked extensively in the Sierras and in the coastal range. He enjoyed the off-the-grid mountain lifestyle and sharing that experience with the tenants on his land. Paul attended the Mountain Bible Church and was devoted to his community. He read the Bible every day and believed in the Savior. He had strong views on property rights and spent years taking advantage of the Santa Cruz Law Library and represented himself in court on several cases. He is survived by two sisters, Laura Carrick, of Westford, Massachusetts and Sandra Catlin of Joseph, Oregon as well as by three nephews and a niece.
