Paul Joseph Rethinger

January 8th, 1943 - March 9th, 2016

Paul is remembered fondly for his big heart, keen intelligence, avid curiosity and irreverent wit. His humility and bravery were punctuated by his infectious laughter, which was also healing. He displayed remarkable grace despite physical limitations due to disease. Paul’s passions included: literature, nature, steam locomotives, fly-fishing on mountain lakes and streams, and the freedom of riding his beloved motorcycles. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Paul attended school in Toledo, St. Meinrad, Indiana (MA), Cincinnati (MEd in English), and Athens, Ohio (MA and PhD in clinical psychology). Paul taught high school English in Cincinnati. After completing an internship at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Vancouver Washington, he was a clinical psychologist in Alamosa, Colorado, Portland and Salem, Oregon. In 1967, Paul married Diane Angle, with whom he had three children: Lisa, Andrea and Jonathan. Paul married Sue Sullivan in 1986. He is survived by his wife Sue Sullivan Rethinger of Tigard Oregon, daughter Andrea Rethinger of North Olmsted, Ohio, Jonathan (Trisha) Rethinger of Thornton, Colorado, sisters Mary Agnes Welch of Sandusky, Ohio and Alice (Dick) Watson of Fremont, Ohio; grandchildren Savanna & Logan Glasheen of Sturbridge, Massachusetts; Ashtynn and Cosette Rethinger of Thornton, Colorado; son-in-law John Glasheen of Sturbridge, Massachusetts and former wife Diane Rethinger of North Olmsted, Ohio. His daughter Lisa Glasheen, his parents, a sister who died in infancy, and brothers James and Father Omer Rethinger predeceased Paul. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Tigard on Saturday April 2, 2016 at 10am. A Celebration of Paul’s life will be held at the Summerfield Clubhouse from 11:45 to 2:30pm. Lunch will be provided. If you would like to attend the Celebration, and have not yet RSVP’d, please do so by Thursday March 31 to [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul’s name to Portland Rescue Mission, P.O. Thanks Paul for sharing your incredible humor with all of us and brightening our lives, especially my Sister's, Sue Sullivan Rethinger. As Foghorn Leghorn would say, "Ah say, ah say Boy, we shall see you again, so save us a seat in Heaven!" I love you Paul!!! Mike Sullivan (your "favorite" Brother-In-Law)

Dear Paul, I am writing this letter only because I can no longer tell you in person what a great friend you have been. It will have to wait. We have some unfinished business. We didn't get to wet a line the last couple of years. We didn't get to chase the little ball around the last couple of years. I can no longer talk with you about anything and hear your "non-judgemental" thoughts and enlightened perspective. We will have to laugh without you. It will have to wait. But in good time, we will re-group and we can get caught up. Your buddy, Steve

Thanks Paul for being my big brother when you were married to Diane and always for being kind through those teenage years of awkwardness. It's been many many years but will miss you and always think of you when I listen to Gordon Lightfoot

I've never met anyone like you. You are an original and the world is less bright without you in it. You are so very dearly missed.

I have such fond memories of working with Paul & Sue at Riverside Psychiatric Hospital. They were both experts in their fields and highly respected and liked.

There's so much I miss already - discussing and recommending books with one another, listening to and singing 'our' music together, memories no one else shares, debating cats versus dogs (it's cats☺), and so much more. I love you. ❤, Andi J.

Paul you were like a big brother to me when married to my sister Diane. I know many years have passed but will remember your kindness towards me when I was a awkward teenager and anytime we spoke thereafter.

I worked with Paul at DDS for ten years. He was a pleasant, energetic, congenial man with a great sense of humor that helped keep the spirits of his coworkers up. And, like me, he was a mediocre, light hearted golfer. Thanks for the good times Paul and for being a great human being.
