Pearl Jean McKenzie
July 30th, 1932 - May 23rd, 2023
Pearl Jean McKenzie, 90, went to be with her Lord and personal Savior, May 23, 2023. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Pearl was born in Commerce, Texas on July 30, 1932 to the late David Roberts and Ernestine Ivory Roberts. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three beloved siblings: Virgene Barber, Gladine Reynolds, and Lonnie Roberts. Pearl was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and dear friend who will be missed deeply. Pearl took great pride in serving her community. She retired from Portland Public Schools in Portland, Oregon after 30 years of touching the hearts, minds, and lives of her students. Pearl received her Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Education from Oregon State University in the Spring of 1974. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (A.K.A.) Sorority and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Pearl was a charter member of the LINKS organization of Portland, Oregon. In addition to teaching, she was a Certified Nurses Assistant. Pearl was an avid traveler who enjoyed taking trips to places including Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, and Canada. While traveling, she loved sightseeing and casting a fishing line into any body of water. Above all, she spent precious time with her cherished family and friends. Pearl was an awesome baker and cook, and she would entertain others making all sorts of tasty pastries and desserts. She loved listening to old R&B music favorites. Pearl is survived by her children: Leon (Grace) McKenzie, Lisa McKenzie, and David McKenzie, Sr.; grandchildren: Stephanie Jackson, Lenee (Will) Dorvil, Stephen Flowers, David McKenzie, Jr., and Donna Reid-McKenzie; 5 step grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 15 nieces and nephews; 35 great nieces and nephews; and two siblings: Billy Scott of Texas and Delores Franklin of Maryland; and a host of extended friends and family.
