Peter T. Lutz, Sr.

Peter T Lutz Sr., 87, of Astoria Queens, NY, passed away on July 31st, 2021, in Columbia, SC. Peter was born on November 12, 1933, to parents Domenica and Joseph Ronald Lutz in Astoria, NY. His impressive career as an engineer included work on the Apollo space missions, leading edge medical devices, and the upgrading of the City of NY water systems. He served his country as a young man in the US Navy and then as a member of the US Army reserves earning the rank of Command Sergeant Major and receiving numerous awards and medals. Peter was very well known in his community of Astoria, NY. He was recognized as a community leader holding numerous volunteer positions, including over a decade as Scoutmaster of Troop 160 where he more than tripled the number of scouts. He also spent many weekends and evenings as a high ranking member of The Rosarians, Holy Name Society, The Knights of Columbus and as a youth hockey coach. He received a number of community awards and recognitions including the Boy Scouts of America’s Silver Beaver and The Bronze Pelican as well as the Saint George Medal for his work with the Catholic Church. He was married to Phyllis Maglio in 1955, going on to have four children, and eleven grandchildren. Peter was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis and parents, Domenica and Joseph Ronald Lutz. He is survived by his loving sisters, Catherine and Elizabeth; four children, Deborah Field, Christine Boyeson (Warren), Gregory Lutz (Michele), Peter Lutz Jr. (Lynn); and his beloved eleven grandchildren: Jessica Lutz, Justin Field, Andrew Field, Samantha Lutz, Hannah Field Thompson (Jackson), Matthew Boyeson, Peter Lutz III, Amanda Boyeson Oldaker (Terence), Pierce Lutz, Gabriella Lutz and Mia Lutz. The family of Peter Lutz would like to thank the Staff of Generations of Irmo Memory Care for all their love and care for Mr.Pete! Thank you also goes out to Heart Stings Hospice, especially Ami, who took loving care of Pete. Visitation will be in Astoria, NY at Faranga’s Funeral Home on Sunday, August 8, 2021 from 2-5 and 7-9 and funeral mass will be at St. Francis of Assisi on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 10:30am with burial at St. Michael's Cemetery at 11:30am.
